Are you ready to start playing guitar? Would you like to learn how to play chords, riffs, and songs you can share with others? Guitar for Beginners is the perfect class if you want a hands-on, supportive introduction to one of the world’s most popular instruments.
In this class, you will get to know the guitar from the ground up. You will practice finger placement, learn how to move confidently on the fretboard, and discover how to accompany group singing or play together with others in a band setting.
We mainly work with chords, but throughout the course you will also be introduced to fingerpicking, riffs, scales, and simple melodies. At the beginning of the semester, you will receive a guitar that is yours to use throughout your stay. This means you can bring it to common singing sessions, play by the campfire, relax with music in the common areas, or practice in your room.
Creating a safe and encouraging learning environment is essential. In Guitar for Beginners, there is room to make mistakes, laugh, and experiment. Everyone learns at their own pace, and we focus on enjoying the process rather than chasing perfection.
Along the way, you will be introduced to basic music theory, giving you an understanding of rhythm, chord symbols, and simple notation. As you move beyond the first beginner songs, you will explore how the guitar is used across different styles and artists – from classic bands to contemporary pop and singer-songwriters.
Teaching takes place in small groups, and each lesson introduces a new chord, technique, or riff. You will have time to practice on your own during class, but working together and playing in small groups is a natural and important part of the learning experience.
Outside the weekly lessons, you are expected to practice on your own during the week. We work with a collection of chords, strumming patterns, and songs, and as the semester progresses, you will gain the confidence to explore and play your own favourite music.
The class is aimed at beginners, but you are very welcome even if you have tried playing guitar before – whether years ago in school or on your own with online videos. There is space for everyone who is curious about music.
We hope you feel inspired to pick up the guitar and join us. Who knows – maybe the next great guitarist starts right here at Rønde Folk High School. 🎸
