Board games are more than just fun! They involve communication, collaboration, strategy, understanding, design, product development, and much more.
In Board Games, we of course play a wide variety of games. But we also analyze them along the way: What is the best way to play a game? Can it be improved? When and with whom does it work best? How does aesthetics influence the gaming experience? Is the game equally relevant for different types of players? And what can we learn from a game and take with us when we leave the table? To support this, we play different versions of the same game and explore the many “design levers” available to a game designer.
Beyond playing games, we also work on revising existing games and developing our own. More specifically, we design and develop new board games using artificial intelligence as well as methods commonly used by game designers and IT consultants when creating games, websites, and digital experiences. You can start a brand-new project or continue working on one of the teacher’s existing game designs. If the projects are successful, the games will be professionally printed and produced in high-quality formats, making them usable for many years to come.
Along the way, you will also learn something about yourself. Games often reveal a great deal about our personalities. Are you the type who risks everything on one move? Do you dare to give up a safe gain for a bigger opportunity? Do you enjoy randomness, or do you prefer structure and order? You will also discover whether you are a good—or not-so-good—loser.
The course is taught by Steffen Synnestvedt Tornbjerg, a passionate board game enthusiast and game developer.
