Danes Abroad

There is no better way to understand a culture than to live it – and no better way to learn a language than to use it!

Danes Abroad - Connect with Your Roots!

Every year, we welcome international students who want to stay connected to their Danish roots or discover them for the first time. Maybe you have a Danish parent or grandparent? Or maybe you have dual citizenship and need to fulfill a residency requirement to keep it? Either way, a stay at a Danish folk high school is a great way to strengthen your connection to Denmark. You can learn the language, better understand the culture, gain insight into the education system, and – perhaps most importantly – make new friends and build a social network.

A stay with us can help you:

🌟 Retain your Danish citizenship if you have dual citizenship
🌟 Find your way in the Danish education system
🌟 Get guidance for your future opportunities
🌟 Get ready for Danish language exams
🌟 Meet a Danish host family and build a network in Denmark

Who Are You?

It doesn’t matter if you see yourself as Danish, international, a global citizen, or something in between. With us, there’s room for everyone! Here you can explore, learn, and create memories that will help you shape your future.

FAQ about Rønde Folk High School

What is the Danish language and culture program like?
It’s both exciting and different. We use creative methods, games, and activities, and we make sure it’s fun and engaging. Your participation is important, and we promise you won’t be bored!
Plenty! When classes are not in session, you’re free to explore the area, but we always offer fun activities in the evenings and on weekends. You can also use the school facilities such as fitness and creative workshops.
Don’t worry! We translate important things like common meetings and lectures into English, and some subjects are specifically organized for international students. All you need to bring is a phone and a headset. And most Danish students are fluent in English, so there’s always a friend by your side to support you.
Most Danish students are preparing for higher education programs like medicine, psychology, or business. But we’re all here to learn and have fun together.

DKK 1,880 per week – that covers everything from tuition to room and board. If you’re going on a study trip, there’s an additional fee.
Does this sound like something for you? We look forward to meeting you and helping you take the next step towards a stronger connection to Denmark. ❤️

What We Expect from Our Students

We have some expectations of you as an international student. But don’t worry, these are neither strict rules nor insurmountable demands – it’s all about getting the most out of your stay here.

Danish is the main language

Even though we are proud of our international environment and offer plenty of Danish lessons and some classes in English, we are still a Danish folk high school. This means that everyday life has Danish as the spoken language, and our common events are also mostly in Danish – but always with translation into English. This is a conscious choice because it gives you the best opportunity to learn the language. And we promise you’ll get plenty of help and support along the way!

Our teaching is probably a little different from what you’re used to. We mix levels – some know a little Danish, others a lot, and some start from scratch. This requires everyone to actively participate and help each other learn. We also use creative methods such as games, projects, and physical activities. If you’re used to a more traditional form of schooling, this might surprise you, but we hope you’ll accept it as an exciting challenge!

At a folk high school, you get what you give. For international students, navigating a new language and getting to know the Danish students takes a little extra effort – especially as their English can vary. The students who do best with us are the ones who throw themselves into it, even when it’s a little challenging. Use the Danish language, participate in activities, and be curious about your fellow students.

You will always have a safe community with the other international students, but we want you to see yourself as part of the whole school. You have valuable perspectives and experiences to share – and we look forward to hearing them!
